Ebubeleni fest boasts top artists

The annual Ebubeleni Music Festival is not only boasting a line-up of top South African artists this year, but will also see New York-born steelpan jazz musician and composer Andy Narrel take to the stage.

The festival, which is in its fourth year, will be held in Port Elizabeth on December 27.

South African musos set to entertain the crowd include award-winning Eastern Cape songbird Zahara, jazz legend Don Laka, Donald, afro-pop artist Thandiswa Mazwai, rapper Ricky Rick and Nomvula hitmaker Nathi, among others..

Festival organiser Tembi Mahambehlala told the Daily Dispatch they chose Narrel because he travels to South Africa alone and used a local band.

Mahambehlala said this year’s line-up had been carefully selected to cater for young and old. The event’s uniqueness from the motley of music festivals around the country is its family-orientated theme.

“The environment at the festival allows families to bring their children as the organisers provide entertainment for them, complete with jumping castles, games and clowns on the sideline,” she said.

The event has grown since the first show in 2012, which called for a bigger venue this year.

“The event has moved to a bigger stadium. This indicates that the event has grown. used to be held at the Adcock Stadium for the past three years.

“This year we are using the St George’s Park Cricket Stadium, which can accommodate more than 15000 people on their grounds without counting the suites for the VIPs, that is how many people we are expecting,” Mahambehlala said.

She said the event’s safety and security was their number one priority, which has been key to their success.

“For the past three years this has been an incident-free event.”

Mahambehlala added that they brought in artists requested by revellers on social media.

She encouraged people to get their tickets beforehand to avoid long queues.

Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers for R160 (general ticket). To see your favourite artists up close, Golden Circle tickets will cost R200 and R700 for VIP tickets.

Gates open at 11am and the festival will start from noon until late. Picnic baskets, camp chairs and umbrellas welcome.

The Daily Dispatch is giving away 10 tickets to the festival.
