Top musicians are reaching for the stars

The Eastern Cape has often been lauded as the home of music as many leading musicians – including Thandiswa Mazwai, Zahara and Nathi – have their roots in the province.

The Daily Dispatch has picked out two musicians whose star is expected to shine even brighter next year.

Afro-soul musician Lilitha Bidla is steadily making waves in the industry.

Her debut single Marikana, which features Bongo Muffin’s Stoan Seate, was released earlier this year, and two weeks ago Seate was in town to shoot the video for the already popular song, which was shot in Nxarhuni village.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch this week, Bidla – who hails from Mount Ayliff – said 2015 had seen many great moments but that working with Seate was the highlight.

“We have performed the song together a couple of times and I have learnt so much from him. It’s been a really good experience,” Bidla said.

Her manager Luyolo Beku said they were looking forward to releasing her debut album Ndim Lo (This is me) next year.

Another rising star to watch is East London’s DJ/producer Blomzit Avenue, AKA Malibongwe Blom, who is soon to release his second album, and this time under his own label, Blomzit Avenue Productions.

Locally, he has scooped various awards and his latest accolade includes the Deep House Awards in Buffalo City Metro.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch, Blom said the first single from the album Dream features a local talent – vocalist Vuyo Tyolo.

“I have also been consulting with DJ Black Coffee and he has given me the go-ahead on the single release as he had his own inputs/recommendations as far as production is concerned,” said Blom, adding that the album, Sounds and Emotions, would feature local artists and producers including King Wave, DJ Tulz, Deepworx and Original Buddhas.

Singer Odwa Matyolweni, who describes his sound as a fusion of reggae and afro-soul, said he has been singing since he was seven years old.

He recently caught the attention of the Steve Biko Foundation with the release of two singles, one that paid homage to the death of Steve Biko and the other to the Bhisho massacre.

His debut album Imvuselelo (The Revival) was released under Nkevastan Entertainment in 2013.
