Security guard cashes in on Cash Mania

A securtity guard from Needs Camp is the lucky winner of the R30 000 grand prize in the Daily Dispatch Cash Mania competition.

After thousands of entries over the last five weeks, Thembisile Tyhokolo emerged victorious. Tyhokolo, 40, works as a security guard at Sutton Square in King William’s Town and is an avid reader of the newspaper.

“When I don’t have the money to buy my own copy of the paper, I ask people to give me theirs when they are done reading it. I never miss a day,” Tyhokolo said.

Married with no kids, Tyhokolo said he had been entering competitions for years and had never won anything except for R47 from the National Lottery. He rents a room in King William’s Town’s West Bank. With his salary he has to support his mother and a number of other relatives in Needs Camp, who live in a shack.

“As soon as I get the money, I will buy building materials for back home. Nothing is more important. Ndiwelwe ngumqa esandleni ,” Tyhokolo said.

“When I entered, I hoped I would win one of the weekly R5000 prizes – I never expected the grand prize. When I read my name in the newspaper announcing the grand prize winner I could not believe it. I still cannot believe it,” he said yesterday.

Acting Daily Dispatch editor Brett Horner congratulated Tyhokolo on his win.

“We want to thank all our readers for taking part in Cash Mania this year. Unfortunately there can be only one grand prize winner and we congratulate Tyhokolo. We must not forget all the other weekly cash prize winners who walked away with R5000. It was our pleasure to give something back to those who support us faithfully in the year.”

The annual Cash Mania competition ran from November 16 to December 21. A cash prize of R5000 was up for grabs each week for the first four weeks. The final draw saw Tyhokolo scooping a massive R30000 – an increase from last year’s R25000. — siyab@dispatch.co.za
