Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has said that all he wants from the head of the South African Revenue Service (SARS)‚ Tom Moyane‚ is “decency”.
Speaking to John Robbie on Talk Radio 702 from New York on Wednesday‚ Gordhan said: “All we want at the end of the day is decency from the equivalent of a director-general.”
He said that he would answer the Hawks’ questions to him about the SARS rogue unit when he had the time to do so.
“I will worry about the Hawks when I’ve finished my main job that I’m paid for‚” said Gordhan. “Most of the answers are public knowledge.”
He said his relationship with Moyane was in the hands of President Jacob Zuma.
“The president has said he is setting up a process. Let’s leave it at that.”
Gordhan said that Moody’s has put the downgrading of South Africa’s credit rating on hold and will visit the country to discuss this further.
“We had very good discussions.”
“They will be visiting South Africa in March to meet various stakeholders and to downgrade us or not to downgrade us.”
“Downgrades are not nice.”
Gordhan said he had no intention of resigning as he had been given a job to do in December and would continue with his mission.
The announcement came as the opposition called for the postponement of the parliamentary debate on the budget because Gordhan would be absent.
This would be the first time that a sitting finance minister missed the debate on the budget.
