Hawks assisting in Meyiwa murder investigation

The Hawks clarified on Sunday that they are assisting, not taking over the investigation into the death of famed Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said that contrary media speculation, the Hawks have not taken over the investigations from the SAPS detectives.

“ are working hand and glove with them, bringing in fresh expertise with a sole purpose of getting to the bottom of the matter and bring justice as well closure to those involved in the matter.”

The Hawks led a multi-disciplinary task team on Sunday to Vosloorus where goalkeeper Meyiwa was murdered.

Mulaudzi said the task team, under the leadership of Gauteng Hawks boss Lieutenant General Prince Mokotedi, sought first-hand information, interviewed key witnesses and reconstructed the scene.

“The direction the investigation shall remain the prerogative of the investigating officers, but as and when there are new developments in the case the public will be kept abreast.”

Meyiwa was at his girlfriend's home in Vosloorus on October 26 2014 when a man entered and shot him, apparently during a scuffle.

Zanukuhle Mbatha, initially arrested for the murder, was released from custody in November due to a lack of evidence.
