Hip hop sensation Emtee is currently the most played and talked about rapper in the country, but the 23-year-old does not want fame to get into his head.
Mthembeni Ndevu, AKA Emtee, told the Saturday Dispatch it had always been his dream to have his music featured on major stations across the country.
“From high school I would distribute my music via bluetooth to my friends and they would pass it on to their friends. I kept on hoping that one day my music would go national. Now that it has, I am grateful to my supporters and God.”
Emtee’s love for music dates back to his primary school days but it was only in high school that he started making extra cash through his craft.
“I was always involved in music, from the school choir to the marimba band. I started recording my own music at the age of 15,” he said.
Prior to his big debut, Emtee said he would give his music to well-known musicians with the hope of making it big in the industry.
“I gave my music to a lot of musicians. It was Morale who paid attention to me and later became my mentor. We did some songs together.”
Within a year of his debut, Emtee has won more awards than some musicians who have been in the industry longer than him.
His first award came from the SA Hip Hop Awards for song of the year for Roll Up. Recently he won four Metro FM Awards for best music video, best hip hop album, listeners choice and best remix. The remix for Roll Up features AKA and Nigerian rapper, Wizkid.
When he is not making music, the Roll Up star said he spent his time with his nine-month-old son Avery – which is also the name of his debut album.
Now that the award-winning rapper has taken the hip hop scene by storm, his next move is international.
“I don’t want to reveal much but people should expect a lot from me this year. We are working on a couple of things, from acting to getting my music to the world,” he said.
Emtee is expected to perform for an East London crowd next month at Buccaneers Pub and Grill.
