ANC top brass meet EC branches

ANC top brass including secretary-general Gwede Mantashe and treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize are expected to meet branch leaders from around the Eastern Cape today.

Mantashe, Mkhize and deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte will lead national working committee (NWC) teams to clarify the NWC decision to accept President Jacob Zuma’s apology.

This followed the findings of the Constitutional Court regarding the powers of the public protector’s (PP) recommendations on the Nkandla scandal.

Zuma apologised to the nation a day after the ruling about his failure to implement the PP findings.

The national officials headed by Zuma met to discuss the ruling after the judgment and the party convened an extended NWC meeting a few days later, committing to defend Zuma and his decision to apologise.

The NWC decided to visit ANC branches across the country to explain the reasoning behind the decision and give branches the opportunity to reflect on the matter.

Mkize will visit all ANC BEC’s in Alfred Nzo today, while Duarte has a scheduled meeting with the Dr WB Rubusana (Buffalo City) region.

ANC provincial secretary Oscar Mabuyane said the third group led by Mantashe will engage ANC branch leaders in Chris Hani today.

Mkize is scheduled to also meet OR Tambo’s branch executive committee tomorrow, while Mantashe will be off to Sarah Baartman on the same day.

At least two ANC branches have so far spoken against the NWC and national officials to back Zuma and accept his apology.

The Sefako Makgatho branch in greater Johannesburg and Rivonia Heroes branch in Gauteng announced last week that if the ANC fails to act against Zuma, the party will show it has lost both its moral standing and integrity.

In a letter the Sefako Makgatho branch addressed to Mantashe, the members stated that Zuma must step down or face a national disciplinary committee for bringing the party into disrepute after he violated the constitution.

Mabuyane said none of the Eastern Cape ANC branches have so far met to discuss the matter “before receiving a proper brief from those who attended the PWC decision”.

“The delegation has invited the 15 member BECs from its alliance partners, ANC Women’s League and Youth League, professionals as well as organised church groups.”

The visits come a few days after ANC provincial chairman Phumulo Masualle visited the Nelson Mandela region.

“The OR Tambo regional executive convened its own regional general council (REC) last week where the matter was also on the agenda. The leadership is trying to reach out to everyone so that when we speak, we speak with one voice,” said Mabuyane.

The ANC leadership is likely to remain in the province as the party has chosen to host its manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. — zineg@dispatch.co.za
