Tourism bodies aim to ‘sell’ EC at Indaba

The Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, together with its stakeholders, will be participating in the annual tourism Indaba in Durban this weekend.

Nelson Mandela Museum (Mthatha), Steve Biko Centre, Buffalo City Metro, Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism, Alfred Nzo district municipality, OR Tambo District Municipality and Eastern Cape Midlands will all be joining to present the best the province has to offer at the 2016 Tourism Indaba Trade Show.

The show takes place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre from May 7 to 9 and the Eastern Cape delegation aims to showcase and sell the Eastern Cape as the “Adventure Province”.

Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) CEO Vuyani Dayimani said promoting the province at various destination marketing platforms, especially where there are international buyers, involved a lot of focus and effort.

“When buyers find a product, establishment or experience within a provincial location in South Africa, that becomes a job half done for the exhibitors, and product owners are able to focus on promoting the actual products and other surrounding experiences,” he said.

ECPTA said the importance of exposing provincial tourism products at the Indaba spectrum is unparalleled because it is one of the largest tourism networking platforms on the African calendar.

They described it as a “huge game changer” able to unlock lucrative doors for tourism players.

ECPTA will this year send 12 small macro medium enterprise’s (SMMEs) to the Indaba.

The 12 from different hospitality and tourism disciplines, including accommodation, tour operators, tourist attractions and tourist activities were chosen through a set criteria that showcases excellence.

“As a tourism authority wanting to grow the tourism sector of the province we see great value in SMMEs hence we train and prepare them for trade shows like Indaba so that they are able to proactively engage and sell their establishments and surrounding offerings for sustainable businesses,” Dayimani added.

BCM’s tourism programme manager Phindile Mavundla said the metro intends engaging with buyers at the Indaba to include the city in their itinerary.

“We also want to convince tour operators to include BCM in their Garden Route itinerary because it currently ends in Port Elizabeth. We want buyers to discover Buffalo City,” Mavundla said. — siyab@dispatch.co.za
