A mine employee has died at Lonmin’s Rowland shaft in Marikana‚ outside Rustenburg‚ in the North West.
Lonmin Plc said in a statement on Monday it had “great regret” in confirming that employee Mr Fanelekile Giyama‚ a loco operator at Rowland shaft‚ had died “following a box hole incident on Saturday‚ 7 May 2016“.
No other employees were injured in the incident.
An investigation into the accident has begun‚ in conjunction with the Department of Mineral Resources and unions.
Lonmin said Giyama’s family is receiving support from the company.
Last month‚ two mineworkers died after a 3.5 magnitude tremor at an AngloGold Ashanti mine at Carletonville on the West Rand.
In February‚ three miners died at Lily gold mine in Mpumalanga after a cave-in. Vantage Goldfields said 87 workers were rescued.
In total‚ 77 workers died on South Africa’s mines last year — the fewest on record in SA.
