ANC announces its mayoral candidates – with a few surprises

The African National Congress has finally announced its mayoral candidates which will go head to head with opposition parties in the country’s most hotly-contested metros‚ with some changes.

Speaking at a much delayed media briefing‚ at St George’s Hotel in Irene on Saturday night‚ ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said the ultimate objective to deploy mayors was to ensure that the best among the ANC were bestowed with the responsibility to lead‚ at whatever level‚ towards the fulfilment of the mandate from the people.

“The African National Congress is satisfied and confident that these mayoral candidates presented consist of some of the best comrades amongst our ranks to advance our programme of radical socio-economic transformation‚” said Mantashe.

Current City of Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau has been renominated as the party’s candidate for the country’s financial hub.

City of Ekurhuleni’s current mayor Mondli Gungubele will be replaced by Mzwandile Masina who is the current chairperson of the ANC in that region.

Nelson Mandela metropolitan municipality Danny Jordaan is set to also retain his position.

Jordaan‚ who is also the president of the South African Football Association was selected last year to replace 83-year-old Benson Fihla. Jordaan’s appointment makes him the fourth mayor in seven years in a municipality whose ANC-led leadership has been mired by political instability and factional infighting

However‚ in the City of Tshwane‚ it is still unclear at this stage as to who will replace current mayor Kgosientso Ramakgopa.

Mantashe said Gauteng was not happy with the three names submitted for consideration in Tshwane‚ but only two were discussed as the third one was not considered.

“We pulled out the third one. I won’t venture into who those people are until a decision has been taken‚” he said‚ adding that the NEC will this week be going to Tshwane to engage with branches and the regional executive members so that everyone supports the names brought forward.

In eThekwini metropolitan municipality‚ Zandile Gumede replaces James Nxumalo after only serving one term.

Gumede is currently the ANC’s eThekwini chairperson.

Other metropolitan mayoral candidates include:

Olly Mlamleli — Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality

Xola Pakati — Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality

Xolani Sotashe — City of Cape Town
