Fort Hare in hunt for new VC as Tom’s term nears end

The University of Fort Hare is calling for applicants for the position of vice-chancellor.

UFH spokeswoman Zintle Filtane said the contract of incumbent Dr Mvuyo Tom would end in December.

UFH celebrated 100 years of existence this year, with Tom’s tenure as VC starting in 2008.

His term was initially scheduled to end in December 2012 but was extended pending the anniversary as Tom and his team had developed the 2009-2016 plan for the centenary.

In a newspaper advert early this week UFH said it was looking for a VC “to build its strategic leadership and enhance its unique position within industry, government and international standing”.

It said it was looking to appoint a leader who could ensure its competitiveness and build on its reputation to make sure it constantly improved.

Asked about likely candidates, Filtane said: “Unfortunately we cannot make any further comment as the process of recruiting a new vice-chancellor just got started.”

The successful candidate is to commence his duties as VC on January 1.

Other duties will include the ability to serve as an ex officio member of the UFH council while chairing its senate.

Applicants should have a doctorate (PhD), management experience in a complex environment; proven record of fundraising; sound knowledge of and insight into the tertiary education sector nationally and internationally, and the ability to fulfil requirements of the Higher Education Act.

An eligibility for appointment as a professor at the university will be an added advantage.

The term of office will be determined by the university council, “normally a term of five years with the possibility of re-appointment for a further term, pending council’s approval”, read the advert.

Remuneration will be determined by a remuneration committee. The closing date for applications is July8.
