Prisons' staffers march in pay dispute

By ZWANGA MUKHUTHU

Eastern Cape prison guards, police and traffic officers have downed tools this morning over the establishment of shift systems, non-existence of promotion policy and payment of outstanding overtime since 2009.

The march has disrupted day-to-day proceedings at the Mdantsane and East London Magistrate's Courts. The employees are gathering at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London where they will march to Eastern Cape correctional services regional offices in Quigney.

The march is by employees from Port Elizabeth, East London, Mthatha, Aliwal North, Queenstown, Butterworth and Flagstaff. They are being bussed in from all these areas. Correctional services regional manager Nkosinathi Breakfast and a representative of the SAPS will receive the memorandum on behalf of national management. -- Zwanga  Mukhuthu
