East London police are investigating an inquest after a badly decomposed body of a man was found in a bush on Wednesday in Southernwood.

Police were called to the scene at 4.30pm.

East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala said the body was discovered by a passerby.

The body is that of a male. Police are struggling to identify him due to the state of his decomposition.

Said Mqala: "The body was found on the corner of Gately and St Peters Road. We cannot estimate the man's age because of his condition. He was wearing a navy fleece jacket with a red collar. On the head he was wearing a navy and white wool cap. His lower body was covered by a grey blanket and plastic."

An inquest docket has been opened for investigation.

Mqala said anyone missing a male relative should contact Fleet Street police station.

She said anyone with information regarding the man's death should also come forward.
