Two East London taxi drivers were arrested today for overloading taxis with over 40 pupils this morning.

The two, aged 25 and 32, were nabbed in Mdantsane and on the N2 in two separate roadblocks as part of the major Operation Basadi (women) which was led and organised by the women police officers. They were  transporting pupils from various East London high schools early in the morning.

Some of the pupils were found seated on each other’s laps  while others were standing in the Toyota Quantums.

The Mdantsane driver was identified by the police as a 25-year-old man who was nabbed while transporting pupils to Qaqamba, Greenpoint, Ebenezer and Alphendale high  schools.

He overloaded 24 pupils in a 15-seater taxi.

Police spokesman Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said the operation started at 7am in Mdantsane and was led by the  “women in blue” and other stakeholders including the traffic department, health, social development and education departments were part of the operation.

While on the N2, Camridge station commander Brigadier Nomso Siganga led the women who executed the operation on the N2.

Cambridge spokesman Mluleki Mbi said the police arrested a 32-year-old who was found driving a 14-seater taxi overloaded with 17 pupils.

“Two other warrants of arrests were issued and two vehicles  were confiscated as they were not roadworthy. Seventeen traffic fines  were issued amounting to R12 750. A total of 155 vehicles were  stopped and the Basadi Operation was led by women as part of  the Women’s Month activities. It was a huge success,” Mbi  said.

“The operation was aimed at intercepting the scholar transport taxis from overloading more than 45 pupils in their taxis to  various schools in East London. The women proceeded to  Vukuhambe special school in Mdantsane and they ended their operation with a visit to a family of a 58-year-old rape victim granny and her nine-year-old granddaughter from NU10,” Mzuku  said.
