Vegetable prices are showing a steady decline as the festive season approaches.

Consumers can expect to pay up to R7 less for a kilogram of potatoes as compared to the beginning of the year.

Between January to June this year, potato prices doubled compared with their cost at the same time last year.

The same can be said for meat and cooking oil, with a kilogram of chicken portions now going for around R7.37 less, and cooking oil down by more than R2.

Since April, the Saturday Dispatch has charted the prices of eight basic household items: sunflower oil, chicken, bread, milk, eggs, maize meal, potatoes and butternut. The findings are published on the first Saturday of every month. The prices are sourced from three different East London supermarkets. — zisandan@dispatch.co.za
