The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is reportedly taking death threats made against officers investigating acting National Police Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane seriously.

The police watchdog made this comment after a News24 report emereged which said Ipid had summoned Phahlane to make a warning statement in relation to a charge of defeating the ends of justice.

News24 reported that the charge relates to Ipid’s probe into an upmarket house that Phahlane built in Pretoria. (http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/exclusive-ipid-to-charge-acting-police-commissioner-20161123)

It is alleged that Phahlane contacted witnesses after he learnt of the Ipid probe. The report also states that an SMS had been sent to one of the Ipid investigators involved in the probe.

Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the police watchdog was not in a position to comment on the report at this stage as it might jeopardise its investigation.

“We are taking the death threats made against our officers very seriously‚” Dlamini said
