3 held after Zim farm guard murdered

Police have arrested three men accused of murdering a Zimbabwean man working on a popular game farm in Kei Mouth just outside East London.

The incident happened two weeks ago.

Vanhukwavo Kuka, 47, was found dead in a guard house situated on the farm.

East London police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala confirmed the incident, saying police had opened a murder case.

“We can confirm the incident and three suspects have since been arrested,” said Mqala.

She said the motive for the murder was not immediately known.

“Police are investigating this and the three suspects will help the police in their investigations,” she said.

Kuka worked on the farm as a game guard and lived in a house in the middle of the farm. He was last seen alive two weeks ago, on a Saturday and found dead on the Sunday. A sharp object had apparently been used to murder him.

A friend, who identified himself only as Ephraim, told the Saturday Dispatch that he last spoke to the victim the day before he was found dead.

“His murder has shocked us, we really don’t know why this had to happen to him as he just got that job. Police should investigate this,” said Ephraim.

The deceased’s sister, Tendai Matanga, had to travel to the Eastern Cape from North West after she heard that her brother had been murdered.

Matanga, speaking through an interpreter, said she wanted to get answers to what led to her brother’s killing.

“I don’t understand why they had to kill my brother. He came here to get work from Mpumalanga but to hear that he’s murdered, there’s something wrong,” said Matanga.

Matanga said her family back home was impoverished and they did not have money to transport her brother’s body to Zimbabwe.

“It seems that we are not going to get my brother’s money from his employer. I don’t know what to do now, we don’t have means back at home.”

Local funeral director Mandla Makinana said the police should investigate the murder and those who are allegedly involved need to answer.

“There’s a lot that is being said about the death of this man from Zimbabwe.

“Police must not leave any stone unturned to get to the bottom of this mysterious murder.

“I’ve kept his body in my parlour as I am trying to assist the Zimbabwean woman who does not know what to do,” said Makinana. — bonganif@dispatch.co.za
