Three suspects have been arrested in Xhwili village near Mthatha in connection with the brutal rape of a 19-year-old woman whose body was hacked with pangas before she was left to die on an open field.
Mthatha police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the victim was in a critical condition in hospital following the attack which took place during the early hours of Sunday morning.
"Three suspects, aged between 20 and 25 years, were arrested and will appear in the Bityi Periodical Court tomorrow," he said. "Police are also trying to link the suspects to other crimes that have been reported in the area in the past.”
