Residence ceiling collapses on UFH students

A University of Fort Hare (UFH) student was hurt while others escaped unharmed when the ceiling at their rooms at the privately-owned Union Arcade residence collapsed this morning.

The students said they were woken up by leaks from the ceiling before it collapsed A first year Education student who lives on the first floor said it was around 5am when they heard screams coming from the second floor.

The ceiling had collapsed in three of the rooms and about five rooms were affected by the water leaks.

One of the female students hurt her arm when parts of the ceiling collapsed on her," said the student.

The residence has two floors, housing male students in the first floor and female students on the second floor.

Earlier this year the students went on strike over the state of this residence, saying the building was old and unsafe.
