Dream of pro-life shelter for furries gets plot boost

Opening a pro-life animal shelter has been the long-held dream of a small group of volunteers who make up East London Animal Welfare (ELAW) and they are now one step closer to making it a reality.

ELAW founder Gail Gane, who started the NPO in 2009, said she was thrilled to have been donated a shady 10000m² piece of land in Thornpark on which she intends to build kennels and a cattery for unwanted and abandoned animals.

Gane, an ardent animal lover who owns a Kidds Beach B&B, said she was thrilled to have been granted the use of the land from Martin and Renier Bekker who have leased it to ELAW at just R5 a year. She said she was looking forward to opening a much-needed animal shelter called Pawprints.

“I was blown away by their offer and am very grateful to them. It is perfect because it is just 10km from Beacon Bay on the Stutterheim Road and it has a dam and electricity.”

Gane said the Bekkers had offered her the land while she was running an ELAW fundraising stall at the Maren Oppie-Plaas Farmer’s Market on their land a few weeks ago.

“Like many others, they asked me where our shelter was and I said we didn’t have one, so they immediately offered us part of their land. They are so kind-hearted.”

Gane said ELAW was made up of just seven members who poured their spare time into feeding and fostering needy pets.

Over the years, they have conducted feeding projects in Parkside, Ducats, Milner Estate and Quigney and are currently feeding needy pets near the race track in West Bank.

“If someone is ill or retrenched and cannot feed their animals, it is not fair on their pets and so we give them a good meal once a week. We also get calls to pick up litters of kittens or make a plan to pay for vet bills because we don’t believe any animal should die because of a lack of money.”

Gane said the need for another shelter in East London was huge.

“It hurts me every time we can’t take an animal in because we live in ordinary homes,” said Gane.

“We would really appreciate corporates to sponsor kennels or building materials and some handymen quotes to help us make the shelter a reality. The plot already has quite a few tinder bricks on it and some foundations have been laid for a structure.

“To build a no-kill shelter would be a turning point for us.”
