Rural school gets a new science lab

Pupils from a rural school in Lower Gqumashe location in Alice have been boosted following the donation of a fully-equipped science lab.

Now they will no longer just read or look at images of science experiments in their textbooks, but will now have a chance to do the actual experiments.

The fully-equipped science lab was handed over by Eastern Cape finance MEC Sakhumzi Somyo, together with Standard Bank.

In fact, Imingcagathelo High has benefited from at least two visits by Somyo to the school and said, after listening to some of the challenges faced by the school, they realised that though the school offered science as a subject, the pupils had no lab room to conduct experiments.

Somyo said they took it upon themselves to look for assistance.

He said Standard Bank had come forward and offered to assist with a lab container. But because of infrastructural constraints, it was difficult to access the school and they opted to fully renovate an existing classroom, converting it to a new lab. The lab was fully furnished with new equipment to the cost of R500000.

“It will help improve the standard of their science results as pupils will now be able to apply theory inpractical experiments,” the MEC said.

Principal Simon Feli, who is also the science teacher, said that he often had to show pupils pictures of experiments, and all science classes were theory-based.

The principal said the science lab would boost results and help neighbouring schools and uplift the entire community.

“The facilities will also be open to the community,” Feli said.

An excited Grade 12 pupil, Asemahle Vuso, 17, said: We are so happy and truly grateful for the new lab.

“This will also improve our understanding of the work and definitely improve our exam results,” Vuso said.
