A mother and a preschool are blaming each other for the alleged assault of a four-year-old boy.

East London police spokeswoman, Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala, said the school and mother had each opened cases.

“It is not an easy case because the toddler allegedly told teachers he was assaulted by his mother while his mother opened the case first and accused the teachers.”

Mqala said police were investigating in conjunction with social workers. Neither the school nor the family are being named to protect the child.

The boy is now in the care of social workers.

The mother accused the school of putting blame on her as an act of revenge.

The Dispatch visited the preschool this week and spoke to four staff members.

They said they could not comment as the matter was heading to court.

The Dispatch saw pictures of the victim’s bruised buttocks and upper thighs.

The mother said the child came back from a sleepover at the school on October 20 with scars on his body. The child cried and said the teacher assaulted him, the mother claimed.

The mother said she went to the school but the staff denied any involvement in the injuries.

The mother showed the Dispatch a letter she received on October 26. It reads:

“Due to allegations of case pending of your child … we as board members of the school have decided to release the child from school. Meaning please keep him at home or find him a school of your choice till investigations are complete.” — malibongwed@dispatch.co.za
