Mdantsane road block strikes crime hard

A group of 21 foreign nationals were arrested after failing to produce residence permits at a roadblock in Mdantsane yesterday morning.

The Home Affairs Department’s district manager in Amathole and Buffalo City Metro, Ngenisile Stuurman, said: “These were Pakistanis, Malawians and Liberians. They will be released once they are able to produce valid documents.

“If they fail to produce their permits, we will declare them undocumented and charge them in terms of the Immigration Act.

“After serving their respective sentences, we will deport them back to their respective countries of origin,” he said.

Stuurman said they would continue to conduct operations throughout the festive season.

Police discovered that 169 motor vehicles had 695 outstanding traffic fines amounting to R336400.

Mdantsane police spokesman Captain Nkosikho Mzuku said the authorities issued 19 traffic fines to the value of R28000 for outstanding warrants, overloading, driving without a driver’s licence, driving unlicensed motor vehicles and unroadworthy vehicles, and driving without a professional driving permit (PDP).

A 42-year-old man was arrested for an outstanding traffic warrant amounting to R1850.

Mzuku said some vehicles, especially minibus taxis, had 29 traffic fines each. Thirty taxi drivers paid their fines on the spot.

They amounted to R9900.

Mzuku said the official roadblock is aimed at intercepting criminals transporting drugs and stolen goods in and out of Mdantsane, as well as stopping illegal immigrants and tracing wanted suspects.

The roadblocks are held under the aegis of Operation Fiela, which Mzuku said was aimed at ensuring a safer festive season.

The operation drew in officers and officials from SAPS, Buffalo City Metro traffic department, provincial traffic and Home Affairs.

The SAPS also issued pamphlets to motorists with messages about the 16 days of activism against abuse of women and children at the roadblock, Mzuku added.

“The deceased has been identified as Nopasinjani Nongogo Mpiyonke, aged 68.

“She was seen leaving the homestead which hosted the traditional ceremony on Saturday December 16 at about 8pm.

“She never reached her home and was seen by a community member on Sunday at about 5am in the open veld. She had sustained an upper body injury,” he said.

The accused made a brief appearance at the Willowvale Magistrate’s court yesterday morning. He was denied bail and remained in custody. The case was been postponed to Tuesday January 2 for further investigation.

Manatha asked people to notify the police when they were holding traditional ceremonies so that police could be deployed to prevent crime.

He advised communities to end their traditional ceremonies early to prevent violence.
