Xasa shuts initiation school after yet another death

 ​Cooperative  governance and traditional Affairs MEC Fikile Xasa this afternoon closed down a Mthatha illegal traditional initiation school and rescued 19 initiates.

Initiation death toll in the province’s now stands at 17 following a third death reported in Amathole district, this afternoon.

Some of the rescued initiates were reunited with their families and others sent to hospital and nearby rescue centre. Four illegal traditional nurses found in the school in Ncise village near Mthatha have been arrested.

Xasa was on his monitoring visits to the OR Tambo were nine of the 17 deaths in the province were reported.

Cogta spokesman Mamnkeli Ngam said of the six deaths in Mthatha, two were reported from this illegal school run by notorious traditional surgeon Gcobani Zikhali Ncume.

Mthatha's six deaths were reported in villages of Kukhambi (2), Mpheko (1), Ross Mission (1), Sikhobeni (1) and KwaLindile (1). ​
