Police yesterday shot and killed seven people believed to have slaughtered the five Ngcobo officers and a retired soldier on Wednesday.

r a shootout with the police while one officer is recovering in hospital after being shot in the legs, Hawks national spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi has confirmed.

The task team tasked with hunting down the police killers pounced on the alleged killers who had been hiding out at Mancoba Seven Angels Ministries near Nyanga High School near Mthatha.

An unconfirmed number of suspects managed to evade arrest.

Police recovered an unconfirmed number of guns.

The major breakthrough in the police mass killing, believed to be the worst in South Africa sent shockwaves and made international headlines this week.

Yesterday's killing of the seven suspected police killers came within the 72 hours deadline that Police Minister Fikile Mbalula said they had been given by President Cyril Ramaphosa to hunt the killers down.

On Wednesday national police commissioner General Kehla John Sitole told the task team to get the killers by all means necessary, saying they must bring them in dead or alive.

Mbalula, who is expected to address the media at the Ngcobo police station at 10am, took to Twitter this morning and thanked Ngcobo residents for working with the police during the massive manhunt, saying "they exemplify what we want from all our communities in South Africa."
