If you think you have what it takes to sing in a gospel group, then Mdantsane Gospel Choir is looking for your voice.

The group, founded in 2013 by Luckie Shongwe and Lusizo Nombitha, will be hosting auditions next Friday for singing hopefuls around Buffalo City Metro.

The auditions will be held at the Jesus Christ Empowerment Centre at the Mdantsane Mall from 10am.

Shongwe said their aim was to benefit young people who were committed to serving the community with dignity and respect, “through music in one voice, one heart and one spirit but from different denominations”.

The group released its debut album, Zone 1: Sing a New Song unto Him in 2016 and it featured Malibongwe Gcwabe, Yolanda Vuthela, Lusizo Kango, Cebo Mzanywa, Simangaliso Zitumane, Siphamandla Samuel and Mncedi Liwani, who is a poet.

Shongwe said they would be naming all their albums after Mdantsane units but would have different themes.

Shongwe said they were searching for 10 voices to join the Eastern Cape Music Awards nominated group.

“The aim of the search is to find new talented gospel singers who will be recruited to join the choir. We are hunting for new dynamic voices which will take the choir to another level as we are celebrating our fifth anniversary.

“The choir has achieved a lot since it was established four years and eight months back,” said Shongwe.

He said they would be looking out for two tenors, four lead singers, two altos and two sopranos. “On top of the singers, we are also looking for six dancers to be a part of the group.”

Unlike other music auditions, Shongwe said they had a long list of requirements that people must make sure they meet before they book their spot.

“Singers must be Christian and should belong to a Christian church. They must be a non-drinkers and non-smokers. must be disciplined and willing to learn and be able to handle pressure.

“We are looking for people who are able to sing, not bathroom kind of singing. These are just some of the things that we will be ticking off before we can audition people,” he said.

The scheduled judges are Umhlobo Wenene FM choral music presenter, Bulelani Koyo, STAND (gospel group) founder and pastor, Gugu Mbuku and MGC choir conductor, Sakhumzi Yokwana-Mtuzula. Shongwe said Duncan Village choreographer, Odwa Hange would be conducting the auditions for dancers.
