The state is confident that it will secure a conviction, while it is also praying for a life sentence when the trial of seven Reeston men, standing accused of kidnapping and killing two youths from their area, resumes later in the year.

State prosecutor Asanda Nolusu today told bail court magistrate Joel Cesar that it was a myth by the defence team that the state’s case was “very weak”, saying she can “bet” her last cent that when the trial resumes, a conviction would be easily secured as the state has enough evidence to nail the seven men. This after the defence team told the court there was no tight case against their clients.

Nolusu was making her closing arguments during the prolonged bail hearing of Lungisa Kula, 34, Luvo Mpongwana, 33, Sakhumzi Jiya, 41, Khayalethu Mngcongco, 31, and Thanduxolo Mbebe, 37, Thozamile Tafane, 45, and Thobela Robeni, 38.

The seven men made their first court appearance on April 24, just two days after they were arrested for the kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Lihle Sokutu and his 20-year-old friend, Londoloza Ntlombeni whom they had accused of breaking into a house in their area.

They have been charged with two counts of murder, two of kidnapping and one of defeating the ends of justice by discarding the two bodies over a 400m cliff near Butterworth.

The seven will know on Wednesday if they are granted bail or not.
