An ordinary council meeting at King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) municipality was brought to an abrupt halt this morning when angry municipal employees stormed the council chambers demanding the immediate removal of corporate services director Ayanda Mdleleni.

They accuse him of nepotism and branded him the source of the municipality's financial problems.

They also want the municipality to pay them task grade monies which they claim was owed to them since 2009.

Interestingly, the issue surrounding claims of irregularities against Mdleleni was hotly debated in council prior to the intrusion by angry workers.

The issue was set at 23 according to the list of items on the agenda but opposition councillors wanted it to be moved up and be dealt with as a matter of urgency.

KSD spokesman Sonwabo Mampoza described the “unwelcome intrusion” by municipal staff as unfortunate arguing that their issues were being addressed by management.

“The process of addressing their grievances is being dealt with,” he said.

But UDM councillor blasted the municipality for failing to address the issues while accusing mayor Dumani Zozo of shielding and protecting Mdleleni who was wreaking havoc in the municipality.

“They should both step down with immediate effect,” he added.

DA councillor Raymond Knock meanwhile revealed that a report into an investigation against Mdleleni by cooperative governance and traditional affairs MEC Fikile Xasa in June last year had never made it to council.

Zozo was not present at the council meeting with ANC councillor Thobeka Mtirara appointed acting mayor.Mampoza told the Dispatch that the mayor had been booked off sick.

By lunchtime, municipal leaders were still locked in a meeting with leaders of the South African Municipal Workers Union at KSD inside the chambers.
