Sterkstroom municipal building set on fire

Angry protestors set fire to a municipal building in Sterkstroom on Monday after a meeting to elect ward committee members failed to sit.
After learning that no municipal officials, nor the Speaker, would be arriving for the meeting, irate protestors torched the municipal offices.
Speaking to the Daily Dispatch about the protest, DA councillor Lindy Haggard said the situation in Sterkstroom was volatile as protestors were demanding the election of ward committee members.
“The municipal building is on fire," she confirmed.Haggard said several meetings to elect ward committee members for ward 27 of Enoch Mgijima local municipality had been postponed after the previous committee was disbanded by council earlier this year.
“Those ward committee members were disbanded. In today’s meeting, not a single ANC councillor or municipal official showed up for the meeting. I was the only councillor at the meeting. That angered the community,” she said.
Police spokesperson Namhla Mdleleni said police were monitoring the service delivery protest as community members had used burning tyres to barricade the road near the municipal offices...
