Golfers’ wheels a big hit with EL wellness centre

East London golfers handed over a sparkling new seven-seater car as an early Christmas gift to a local wellness centre on Sunday.
The new set of wheels donated to the Haven Wellness Centre in Parkridge comes at the right time: the centre’s previous car conked in earlier this year after 10 years of faithful service.
The donation was made by the 68-member all-male Border Nomads Golf Club. Each year the club holds golf days and other events to raise funds for a local non-profit foundation.
Captain of the golf club Dr Sydney Mogafe said each year the club donated to a pre-selected charity in the form of a tangible asset needed most.
“We don’t give money. We supply a need that the charity has. Part of the money raised for Haven Wellness Centre was from our own pockets, and the rest from fundraisers held throughout the year.”
Even though they had to add on a small fee towards getting the car, chairperson of the centre’s board Carol Warmberg said: “The centre sold the old car, and with that money contributed towards purchasing the new car alongside the funds from the golf club.
“The new car comes at just the right time, as our old car was falling apart. It was indeed much needed,” she said.
Warmberg said the centre had evolved from being a support centre for young and old adults living with HIV to being a fully fledged multipurpose centre that housed vulnerable children during the day, fed hungry people and offered 24-7 palliative care for terminally-ill patients...
