Pupils stranded as department fails to pay for scholar transport

Scores of pupils from Embekweni Primary School outside Mdantsane have been left stranded after the Department of Education failed to pay for scholar transport.
Parents of the children say the pupils have not attended school since the start of the new school year.
Embekweni principal Pakamile Tyindyi said the standoff started in February 2018 when the department failed to pay the contractors to fetch the pupils.
Pupils being transported were moved from Nxamkwana Primary School, which is 12 kilometres away from Embkweni, after the department closed down the school (Nxamkwana primary).
Disgruntled parent Xoliswa Mtshankulu said, “We have been sent from pillar to post by the department.
“It really hurts me to see my child not go to school. We don’t have money to find and pay for a contract to take our children to school. We have been meeting as parents, but nothing fruitful comes out of it. We have no hope and so does my child, and at the end of the day the children are affected the most as they are missing out on lessons at school.”..
