WSU closes campus after student violent protest

Walter Sisulu University’s Ibika campus in Butterworth was on Monday morning indefinitely closed and students ordered to vacate the premises immediately.
“Campus is being officially closed as a result of the violent protect action by students. All students have been requested to go home,” said university spokesperson Yonela Tukwayo.
“It saddens us to close Ibika campus and send students home because the majority of students are not participating in the [protest] action. This is an unnecessary financial burden on student who must raise money to go home and return at a later date.”
Tukwayo said the campus closure would further delay the NSFAS allowances that were scheduled to be paid this week. “Students were asked to verify their bank details and this cannot be done since the campus is closed,” she said.
Student leadership of the campus were expected to meet with the university management on Monday afternoon.
Police and security guards used rubber bullets to disperse the students who pelted them with stones.
