President Cyril Ramaphosa will be in town on Friday for the launch of the national cleanup and safety campaign to be held at Mdantsane’s Sisa Dukashe Stadium.

This comes as Buffalo City Metro (BCM) battles to keep its streets clean, attracting criticism from increasingly disgruntled ratepayers who constantly complain about rubbish that is not picked up on time.

The Good Green Deeds campaign aims to reduce littering and illegal dumping, and all other forms of pollution.

It targets residents, businesses, labour, NGOs, interfaith groups and society at large. Similar launches will soon be held in other provinces.

At a council meeting on Wednesday, BCM council speaker Alfred Mtsi urged councillors to “take advantage of the platform in our effort to try and bring a lasting solution to the challenges of waste management in our city”.

“We are expected to do our level best to ensure that the occasion becomes a success in the interest of its objectives,” Mtsi said. “As we are aware, in terms of our metro growth development strategy we have a commitment – it’s part of our strategic objectives to ensure that our city tries to become a green and clean city.

“But despite the challenges of cleanliness we are facing, many efforts are being embarked upon under the leadership of the mayor.

“This is done in partnership with other strategic partners in the form of businesses as well as government departments,” Mtsi said.

Speaking to the Dispatch on Friday, BCM mayor Xola Pakati said meetings with stakeholders were being held in preparation for the event.
