Mayor recovering in hospital after a deadly car accident

Amathole district municipality mayor Nomfusi Nxawe has fully recovered after being involved in a fatal car accident outside Alice on Friday morning.
A female driver and her child passenger driving in another vehicle died in the crash.
On Saturday afternoon Nxawe's son, Siya Rexe said: “She [Nxawe] has fully recovered but the doctors are only keeping her for observation at Life Beacon Bay. She is talking and has no visible injuries. She only sustained light injuries from impact and also suffered shock.”
Rexe said Nxawe was driving from East London to Fort Beaufort in a state-owned Mercedes Benz with bodyguards when they were involved in a car accident that claimed two lives.
“We are grateful that she survived,” he said.
The accident took place on the intersection of the R63 and R345 at 9.45am on Friday between King William's Town and Alice, said Eastern Cape transport department spokesperson Unathi Binqose.
Binqose said two people died when a silver Toyota Corrola and a grey Nissan bakkie collided.
The two cars are believed to have started a pile up.
Binqose said a female passenger of the bakkie and her child passenger were declared dead on arrival at Victoria Hospital.
“Multiple people were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. We are not sure yet about the exact number.”..
