Five people have been killed while others sustained injuries after a collision between a bus and a truck in one of Mthatha’s busiest inner city street during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The accident reportedly took place at about 3am in Sutherland Street which joins with the R61 cutting through the  city. Eastern Cape provincial transport department spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie said a truck had collided with an Iveco mid bus instantly killing one men and four women.

“All the deceased were travelling in the bus which was carrying at about 20 passengers,” said Rantjie.

She said the cause of the accident was still being investigated.
