Simphiwe Mdingi, the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu) leader in the Amathole district municipality, was shot and killed outside his home in Amalinda on Wednesday night.

At this stage it is unknown how many gunmen were involved, but it is believed Mdingi was killed in a drive-by shooting.

Police spokesperson captain Mluleki Mbi confirmed the incident.

Mdingi  had been critical of operations in the municipality, particularly vocal on issues of suspensions and pay increases.

This is a developing story.
