PE man shot in suspected targeted hit

A 30-year-old man was shot and killed at 7.30pm on Sunday in Gunguluza Street, New Brighton, in what appears to have been a targeted hit. .

Sinethemba “Mabani” Kaya, 30, died after being shot multiple times near KwaZukkies Tavern..

Police found about 14 spent 9mm cartridges scattered at the scene.

Police spokesperson Capt Andre Beetge said details on the shooting  remained unclear as no witnesses had come forward.

“Police responded to a call about shots being fired in the street,” Beetge said.

“On arrival, he [Kaya] was found lying in the road near the tavern.

“At this stage it is unclear what transpired but leads are being followed up.

“It is also unclear if he was inside the tavern and then left or was arriving.”

Beetge said there were rumours that Kaya had been sitting in a car parked nearby shortly before the shooting.

“This is a targeted murder.

“The motive remains unclear at this stage.”

Beetge said the serious and violent crime task team was looking into leads regarding the murder possibly being gang-related.
