The Trust Centre building in the East London CBD was immediately closed on Monday while it was being deep cleansed and decontaminated after an employee tested positive to Covid-19.

Buffalo City Metro spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said the building was closed as a precautionary measure and the decontamination could take up to three days before it is reopened for re-use.

He said the administrative building had 12 floors and housed the office of the city manager Andile Sihlahla and most of the city's heads of department, including employees of various directorates.

Ngwenya said all staff working at the Trust Centre had been informed that they were now required to work remotely or from their home until further notice.

“The City has also set up screening for all staff at Trust Centre building and this will be carried out tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. This is precautionary measures to the safeguard the safety of employees as per requirements set out by the Department of Health,” said Ngwenya.

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday declared Buffalo City Metro one of the metropolitan areas with high infection rates, and classified it as a hotpot that would see intensive public health interventions.

Ramaphosa said a hotspot was an area with more than five infected people per 100,000, or where new infections are increasing at a rapid pace.
