South Africans are under the impression that lockdown is over after President Cyril Ramaphosa's address, but this is not the case.

On Wednesday, Ramaphosa announced new changes under level 3 lockdown, easing some restrictions.

The changes include easing the restrictions on sit-down restaurants, accredited and licensed accommodation, conferences and business meetings, cinemas, theatres and casinos, to name a few.

No mention of tobacco sales or the reopening of parks was made.

According to Ramaphosa, the changes come after discussions with industry representatives on stringent prevention protocols, advice from scientists and consultation with premiers.

Ramaphosa did not announce a date regarding when the industries would return to work, saying the details were yet to be confirmed and to be gazetted by the co-operative governance and traditional affairs minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

To date, South Africa has 80,412 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 1,674 deaths. Here is what is not allowed under “advanced level 3" lockdown:

  • The sale of tobacco products, including cigarettes.
  • Reopening of home-sharing accommodations like Airbnb.
  • No person may be evicted from his or her land or home. A court may grant an eviction order, but this will be stayed and suspended until the end of level 3.
  • Travelling between provinces, districts and metropolitan areas to visit family members is still restricted.
  • No going to the park and social gatherings are allowed, except for funerals, which are capped at 50 people.
  • No initiation practices for males or females are allowed. This includes attending an initiation school, and circumcision as part of initiation practices.
  • No on-site consumption of liquor may be allowed.
  • Gyms and fitness centres remain closed.
  • Contact sports will be allowed only for training and modified activities with restricted use of facilities.
  • You are not permitted to be out in public without a mask.
