Struggle stalwart Andrew Mlangeni has died

Anti-apartheid activist Andrew Mlangeni died at a Pretoria hospital on Tuesday night, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Wednesday morning.

Mlangeni, 95, was the last remaining Rivonia trialist. He had been admitted at 1 Military Hospital in Thaba Tshwane, Pretoria last week on Tuesday after complaining of abdominal pains.

Sending his condolences to the Mlangeni family, Ramaphosa spoke highly of the struggle stalwart.

“The passing of Andrew Makete Mlangeni signifies the end of a generational history and places our future squarely in our hands.”

With his passing as the last remaining Rivonia trialist, bab' Mlangeni has indeed passed the baton to his compatriots to build the South Africa he fought for to liberate and reconstruct during our democratic dispensation.”

He was a champion and examplar of the values we need to build South Africa that provides dignity and opportunity for all and which takes its rightful place in the global community of nations,” he said.
