Heavy jail sentences handed out to Eastern Cape rapists

Four life sentences and a combined 189 years imprisonment have been handed down by the Bhisho High Court and Mqanduli Regional Court, respectively, so far in November.

Monwabisi Mbonyuza, 39, from Thembeni location in King William's Town, was convicted and sentenced to four life terms and 97 years for eight counts of rape and three counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances at Bhisho High Court on November 5 2020.

Mbonyuza was sentenced for rapes and a spree of robberies committed in the Zwelitsha and Bhisho areas from July 2011 to September 2015, where he raped eight women aged between 14 and 21.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Khaya Tonjeni said Mbonyuza had been identified through DNA and arrested in June 2019.

Wandile Gxamthwana, 20, was found guilty and sentenced to 16 years imprisonment for the rape of a 13-year-old girl in March 2019.

Phumelele Wakhaba, 42, was sentenced to three years imprisonment or a fine of R10,000 after he pleaded guilty of raping a 13-year-old girl in March at Lower Ngqwara location, Mqanduli in December.

Zukisa Msubu, 27, was found guilty and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment on a count of rape and 25 years on a count of two armed robberies. Msubu raped an 18-year-old woman in December 2019 in the bushes near Holomisa Senior Secondary School in Mqanduli.

Acting Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the hard and fruitful work by detectives.

“Their role is to ensure that all sexual offenders are brought in court and face the consequences of their actions. These sentences are proof that they have executed their mandate and responsibility well. We applaud the good work they do with prosecutors and the courts,” he added.
