An Eastern Cape nurse has been suspended after he was arrested for sexual assault.

A woman, who accompanied a child to hospital, allegedly fell victim to the nurse at Holy Cross Hospital in Flagstaff last week Thursday.

The provincial health department has since launched an investigation into the matter.

On Wednesday, Eastern Cape health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth condemned the incident.

“It is alleged that a male nurse accosted a woman who was escorting her child to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital for specialist care when he allegedly took her to a consulting room where the alleged sexual assault occurred,” said Meth.

According to the MEC, the woman screamed for her help before she could be raped.

Meth vowed that the nurse would be fired if found guilty.

“We cannot have such people masquerading as healthcare workers,” she said.

The MEC urged men to stop women and children abuse.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Khaya Tonjeni confirmed that a 31-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday. He is expected to appear in the Flagstaff magistrate's court on Wednesday.
