Khayalethu Sandi, 46, was arrested on October 7 2019 while allegedly driving a truck, which he had filled with fuel at East London filling stations, using a cloned card.

He made his first court appearance on October 8 2019.

“His bail application was turned down and he was remanded in custody until lockdown, when he was released in compliance with Covid -19 regulations,” said provincial Hawks spokesperson Capt Yolisa Mgolodela on Tuesday.

Mgolodela said the matter was reported to the Hawks' East London Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for further investigation.

According to Mgolodela, the Hawks investigation positively linked Sandi to similar incidents in various filling stations around East London.

“Sandi would use cloned cards encoded with account information of Standard bank clients while the clients were in possession of their original bank cards. Sandi 's conduct prejudiced Standard bank clients cash to the value of R133,000,” she said.

The matter was remanded for June 11 for sentencing.

Provincial Hawks head Maj-Gen Mboiki Obed Ngwenya applauded the East London Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for ensuring that perpetrators faced consequences for their actions.
