A tremendous year for Selborne College rugby was acknowledged when they were named the second best rugby school in the country.

The SA School Sports combined rugby rankings for 2015 gives points based on the performance over the year of the schoo ls U14A, U15A, U16A and first rugby teams.

Selborne were second to Paarl Boys High, while finishing ahead of Glenwood, Grey College and Affies respectively.

This was possible after Selborne rewrote their own history as all four of their A teams finished in the top 10 of their individual rankings for the first time.

“This is the first time that all ‘A’ teams are in the top 10,” said Selborne public relations officer Jeff Fetting.

“More than the rankings is the fact that the boys played some delightful running rugby this year.

“The first team also boxed well above their weight against some really big names.

“Overall we are more than happy with the type of rugby Selborne is playing and we look forward to a promising year in 2016.”

Selborne first team, coached by Kevin Taylor and Phiwe Nomlomo finished seventh on their final log, which was headed by the unbeaten Paarl Boys High team, claiming some top wins over the season, including beating their fierce Eastern Cape rivals Grey High in their final match of the season, with the win also pushing them just above Grey in the final standings.

The Selborne U16 team, coached by Mike Cousins, finished fifth on their rankings, with Glenwood, Grey College, Helpmekaar and the table-topping Paarl Boys High above them.

The Selborne U15 team, coached by Neil Erasmus, finished sixth in the country, with Paarl Boys High just above them in fifth, Jeppe in fourth, Grey College third, Glenwood in second and Affies topping the table.

The Selborne U14 team enjoyed the best season of the lot and finished second in the country, beating Glenwood, Paarl Boys High and Paul Roos and finishing just behind Outeniqua who claimed top spot.

All these points added up then saw Selborne ranked as second in the country, a very impressive feat over a great year.

The next highest Border school ranked was Hudson Park at 32nd in the country and they will be very happy to have outperformed their College rivals Queen’s, who finished 35th and Dale, who finished 46th respectively.

Selborne’s rugby was not the only sport to have shone this year as their hockey also enjoyed some top success.

The Selborne first hockey team, coached by Warwick Scholl, finished the year ranked at sixth in the country with Grey High, Kearsney, Paul Roos, SACS and Maritzburg above them on the log.

The Selborne U16 hockey team, coached by Jonothan von Hoesslin enjoyed the highest ranking as they ended second overall, finishing just behind the top-ranked Maritzburg team.

This indicates a great all-round winter season for the school and they will want to build on it next year.
