Season ends on high for young biking attractions

Young  cycling enthusiasts were rewarded for a great season of pedalling action at the Eastern Cape cycling awards, held at Hudson Park Primary’s Centenary Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The awards ceremony was for cyclists in the East London region and recognised their top results over another long and gruelling season.

Major awards were handed out for the various cyclists’ exploits in the provincial and national XCO series as well as provincial colours for mountain biking and road cycling.

“The XCO series this year was based on four events both at provincial and national level,” said Eastern Wheelers chairman Luca Fanicchi.

Usually the provincial event takes place two weeks prior to the national, allowing for the province to select a team for the national event.

The series are generally used as a build up to the South African XCO championships, a one-day event which crowns the South African champions in various categories.

The series results are calculated using the top three results.

For the East London region in the national XCO Cup Series Megan Emslie and Alessandro Fanicchi both finished third in South Africa in the Nipper category.

In the provincial XCO Series Megan Emslie and Alessandro Fanicchi both claimed first place finishes in the Nipper category.

In the Sprog division Lourens Spies came in second place, while in the sub-junior category Cameron Luckhoff finished second and Erik Spies third.

In the youth division Robyn Emslie managed a first place finish, while Kade Luckhoff scooped second place.

Liam Venter finished third in the junior category and Andrew Emslie second in the vets.

On the SA national champs standings, the once-off final event, a few local riders enjoyed top placings.

Megan Emslie ended in second place and Alessandro Fanicchi eighth in the Nipper division, while Sorina Venter came in 10th in the Sprog category.

Cameron Luckhoff was 23rd in the sub-juniors while in the youth division Robyn Emslie came in sixth, Kade Luckhoff 21st and Joshua Doubell 33rd.

At the junior level Liam Venter came 19th while in the vets Francois Smith took 12th and Andrew Emslie 13th.

Provincial colours were then awarded to a number of the cyclists.

“The East London district has had another extremely successful year, with many of our young cyclists achieving superb results,” said Fanicchi.

Claiming provincial colours for mountain biking were Alessandro Fanicchi for Nippers, Sorina Venter for Sprog, Robyn Emslie, Kade Luckhoff and Adriaan Venter for Youth, Liam Venter for Junior and Andrew Emslie for Sub-Vet.

On the road cycling side Alessandro Fanicchi and Elne Owen were awarded provincial merit certificates while Eben Hartslief claimed full provincial colours.

They will aim to impress again in the new season next year.
