Athletes push hard to raise funds for centre

IN AN effort to assist the Canaan Care Centre in Belgravia, Crossfit East London has come up with an idea to raise funds through burpee exercise.

The centre provides day-care and support for persons with profound and physical disabilities.

Ten athletes from Crossfit had been participating in the Burpee Challenge since February 9, asking the public to sponsor as many burpees for R1 each.

A burpee is a form of exercise also known as the squat thrust, a full-body exercise used in strength training and as aerobic exercise.

It is performed in four steps, and was originally known as a “four- count Burpee”.

The athletes started with one burpee a day and are increasing by one a day to June 4 where they will be doing 116 burpees a day.

This event is also hosted around the world by Crossfit athletes to commemorate the 116th birthday of the inventor of the burpee, Dr Royal Huddleston Burpee, which is on June 4.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch during the Challenge at the Hemingways Mall on Saturday Carl Sparg from Crossfit East London – who is the brain behind the fundraising event – said instead of doing a commemoration only, they also felt like giving back.

“The centre is in dire need of funds and we wanted to ensure that we give back to those that give selflessly,” said Sparg, adding they hoped to raise R7000 for the centre and one of the athletes had already raised R5000.

Support worker at Canaan Care Centre Ellie Hosking said the centre was in constant need of funds and currently has a shortfall of between R30000 and R40000 a month. “The financial burden to families caring for these children is huge and we have therefore tried to keep our fees as low as possible.”

The centre, a non-profit organisation, is currently receiving support from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund and the Department of Social Development. “The balance is raised through grants, pledges or donations from churches, individuals, service clubs and business as well as through fundraising events and we are very grateful,” Hosking said. —
